Abstract

<PICT:0821573/III/1> In the furnace production of carbon black, the black produced is cooled, solely by means of an indirect heat-exchanger arranged within the stream of black, to a temperature at which the carbon black produced is substantially non-reactive with the surrounding gaseous reaction product but which is above 1500 DEG F. This temperature may be as high as 2,200 DEG F. As shown, a suspension of black in by-product combustible gas passes from a reactor 10 to a cooler 12 provided with a heat-exchange coil 14 through which is passed water, a molten salt or a gas. The heated exchange medium is cooled in a waste heat boiler 18. The cooled suspension is optionally further cooled by passage through an air-cooled tube 20 provided with a spiral radiator fin. The black is separated in cyclones 22 optionally followed by filter 24. The tail gas is burned, if desired together with auxiliary fuel from line 29, in chamber 28 and thereby preheats the air required for the combustion. Before mixing with the tail gas, the heated air passes through a turbine 32 which operates air compressor 30 and an electric generator 34. The waste gases from chamber 28 may pass to waste heat boiler 18. Excess tail gas and hot air may be withdrawn through pipes 36 and 38 respectively.
