821,540. Magnetic compositions. LICENTIA PATENT VERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. Aug. 24, 1956 [Aug. 24, 1955], No. 25987/66. Class 38 (2). A magnetic material comprising two magnetic components, one being metallic and the other oxidic, is made by oxidizing the surface of metal particles, mixing the particles with oxides or oxide forming substances, and converting the admixture into a magnetic composition into which the oxide coatings are integrated. The metal particles may be of iron or alloys of iron with nickel or cobalt, and oxidized by the action of air and water, or by heating in oxygen or carbon dioxide or steam. The added materials may be oxides, carbonates or oxalates of bivalent metals such as nickel and zinc when a soft magnetic material is desired or of barium, strontium or lead to produce a hard magnetic material. After compressing to a compact body, the mixture is heated to produce by sintering ferrites from the oxide coatings and added materials. The sintering may be in an inert gas such as nitrogen or argon. In producing permanent magnets, the oxidization of the metal particles may be continued until the iron constituents are so small that they exhibit permanent magnetic properties in virtue of their size.
