Abstract

821,536. Toothed wheels. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. June 21, 1957 [July 3, 1956], No. 20597/56. Class 80 (1). A composite gear-wheel comprises a metal disc 1 having on one side a flange 4 and on the other side a peripheral shoulder 5, said flange and shoulder forming radial and axial keys for a moulded non-metallic toothed rim portion 10. The rim portion, which may be of nylon, also penetrates a number of apertures 7 in the disc 1 to prevent relative rotation between the disc and rim, and is moulded around the grooved end portion of a shaft 8 secured in the disc 1, thereby forming a bearing boss 12. The flange 4 and shoulder 5 are simultaneously formed in the disc 1 by a pressing operation in which a narrow peripheral portion of the disc is axially displaced. The pressing operation also forms the required apertures in the disc. The same pressing operation may, as shown in Fig. 6, axially displace an arcuate portion 14 of the disc so as to leave on one face an arcuate depression which is filled by the material of the rim portion 10. The gear-wheel may then be used as a rotary electric contact member, e.g. for a windscreen wiper drive, since it has on one side an insulating arcuate portion flush with a metallic face.
