Abstract

876,624. Making rotors. FIRTH CLEVELAND Ltd. July 2, 1957 [Dec. 7, 1956], No. 7754/61. Divided out of 876,611. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] A flat metal strip 1, Fig. 1, is punched to shear it along lines 4, and transverse elements 5 are upset out of the plane of side portions 6 (only one of which is shown). The strip 1 is bent into cylindrical form, as shown in Fig. 2, with its ends 24 abutting and with its elements 5 projecting inwardly to form rotor blades 22. The circumferential spacing of the rotor blades is reduced by corrugating or crimping the side portions 6. Alternatively, a second strip 21 may be provided, with its blades 23 intercalated with the blades 22. The rotor is completed by cast end discs 51, Fig. 5, having annular recesses 55 to receive the side portions 6. The end discs may be restrained from moving apart from one another. Alternatively, tabs 57 are formed on the side portions 6 and project through slots 56 in the end discs, the tabs being corrugated or, as shown, bent over to retain the end discs. The rotor is balanced by breaking off projections 58. In an alternative construction, Fig. 8, each end disc 81 has retaining lugs 89 which are bent down into holes 83a in the side portions. The rotor may be used in a transverse-flow fan or pump such as described in Specification 876,611 (see Group XXVI). One of the end discs may be integral with the rotor of the driving motor.
