Abstract
718,138. Turbines and compressors. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. March 31, 1953 [April 2, 1952; Oct. 23, 1952], Nos. 8467/52 and 26650/52. Class 110(3) A rotor for axial-flow turbines or compressors comprises a sheet metal disc having a peripheral axially-extending flange and a row of tubular blades mounted on the flange, each blade being formed at its root end with a flange transverse to the blade axis which sits on and is secured to the outer surface of the flange on the disc. The rotor in Fig. 1 comprises a plurality of rotor elements each comprising a pair of discs 1, 2 secured together and having peripheral flanges la, 2a which are formed with inwardly-projecting radial flanges 1b, 2b so that the rim is of channel section. The rotor blades 3 are formed of tubing of the appropriate aerofoil cross-section and the leading and trailing edges are split and the parts splayed out to form circumferentially-extending flanges 3a which are mounted on the peripheral flanges of the rotor discs. Channel section reinforcement members 4 are disposed between blades over the abutting flanges 3a and the parts are secured together by rivets 5, 6 or by metal fusion. The rotor elements are spaced apart by channel-section spacers 7 and are held together by tie-bolts 10. The stator comprises frusto-conical liners 11 in which the fixed blades are mounted by means of tabs 12a, and an outer casing 14 which has circumferential corrugations 14a around the blades 12. The fixed blades 12 are secured to a shroud ring 13 at their inner ends, the flange 13a of the shroud forming a seal with the spacer 7. In Fig. 4. the rotor discs 1, 2 and the reinforcement members 4b have no radially-inwardlyprojecting flanges, and the spacers 7 are located adjacent the flanges 1a, 2a of the rotor discs. The stator blades 12 in this embodiment are secured to the liner 11 and to the shroud ring 13 by means of circumferentially-extending flanges 12c, 12d similarly to the rotor blades. Tie-bolts are not used in this embodiment. The rotor blades 3 may be secured together at their tips by means of a circumferentially-projecting tab extending from each blade and secured by welding to the next.
