820,798. Winding toroidal coils. MICAFIL Ltd. March 2, 1956 [March 8, 1955], No. 6610/56. Class 83 (4). A device for winding wire on an annular body 17 comprises a wire supply magazine holder 23 mounted on a rotatable member 10 adapted to receive the annular body so that the axis of rotation of the member is a tangent to the means circumference of the annular body, an adjustable tension control mechanism to maintain wire tension independently of the supply on the magazine, and wire guiding means for maintaining the plane of revolution of the wire about the body, the winding device being angularly movable for locating the member relatively to the mean circumference of an annular body and for moving it away from the mean circumference. As shown, a gear-wheel 5 on a driven axle drives through intermediate gears 7, 8, 9 a pinion 10 supported by a hardened guidemember 11, the support plate, pinion 10 and guide 11 being apertured to afford entry of the annular body 17, a closure 13 controlled by a lever 12 closing the aperture for insertion of the body. The magazine 23 of wire is mounted on a brake drum 22 on an axle 18 secured to the pinion 10 and relative rotation prevented by a pin 24. A brake wire embraces the drum 22 over an angle of 300 degrees and is tensioned by a spring 29 controlled by an adjusting lever 32 and screw 34. Wire from the magazine 23 passes on to the annular body by way of a guide 20. While the body is being wrapped with wire a reserve magazine 23 on the axle driving the pinion 5 may be filled with wire. The winding device can be swung up to facilitate insertion and removal of the annular body 17, a stop 16 indicating the operative position of the device. The wire tension is controlled by the brake drum 22, the unwinding wire producing a torque opposite in direction to that of a spring 30 on the lever 19 on which the guide 20 is mounted. The resultant of these torques either releases or tightens the spring 29 and hence decreases or increases the braking of the drum 22.
