Classes 120(2) and 120(3) Thread is wound with a predetermined tension at an adjustable winding speed by giving the predetermined tension to a loop of thread before a winding bobbin by means of a loaded member which compensates for variations in the size of the loop by varying the speed of rotation of a thread guiding roller feeding thread into the loop. As shown in Fig. 1 a member 4, pivoted at 5 is loaded by a spring 6, one end holding the thread and the other oscillating between contacts 14, 15 which when the member 4 touches either of them causes a change in an infinitely variable gear 16 to vary the speed of a roller 3 feeding thread into the loop. Fig. 3 shows the mechanism represented at 13 and 16 in Fig. 1. When the member 4 contacts either 14 or 15 a plunger is lifted, and the motion is transmitted by a rocking lever and bell crank lever clamped on a nut 31 so that the nut 31 rotates on a screwthread 29 of a tube 26 to alter the position of a friction wheel 23 on a driving wheel 22 of a friction gear which governs the speed of the guiding roller 3. A pointer 27 indicates the position of the wheel 23. Alternatively, the gear 16 may be controlled by known mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electric or magnetic means responsive to the contact made at 14 or 15 by the member 4. The tension given to the loop may be constant or vary with the growth of the package, the latter being effected in the embodiment shown by gears on the nut 31 and shaft of the member 4 increasing or decreasing the torsion in a spring on the shaft of the member 4.
