Abstract

In a method of lining rigid, cylindrical pipes or vessels of metal, rigid thermosetting plastic, fibre glass or glass, a tubular liner of a polymer plastic, e.g. polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride, and having an outside diameter smaller than the inside diameter of the pipe to be lined is inserted into and swollen or otherwise expanded into contact with the inside wall of the pipe, the liner being subjected, either before or after insertion into the pipe, to the action of high-energy electrons, gamma rays or X-rays, the radiation dose being sufficient to increase the temperature resistance of the plastic over that of the unirradiated plastic without causing appreciable degradation thereof. The liner, after insertion into the pipe, may be saturated with a monomer such as methyl methacrylate and caused to swell into contact with the pipe the assembly then being irradiated to convert the monomer into polymer and render the swelling permanent and, simultaneously, cause adhesion of the liner to the pipe. Alternatively, the assembled pipe and liner is heated to cause the liner to expand into contact with the pipe. To reduce the diameter of the liner the latter may be suspended vertically while in a heated condition and extended by a weight, or drawn through a tapered die. An irradiated tubular film may be forced by gas pressure against the internal surface of the pipe to form a primer coating and to facilitate bonding of the liner to the pipe. According to the Provisional Specification, tubular or other members are in addition to lining thereof, covered with polyethylene applied in sheet form or by spraying, or deposited from solution; if the cover is in the form of a tube the latter is expanded by internal pressure, fitted over the pipe, and caused to contract by reheating. Also, the die for reducing the diameter of the liner may be lined with polytetrafluoroethylene, the liner, after emergence from the die, being cooled by cold water spray or a forced air current.
