Abstract

820,049. Making cartons. JAGENBERGWERKE A. G. Dec. 9, 1955 [Feb. 5, 1955], No. 35396/55. Class 18. Apparatus for forming tubular cartons from blanks by folding the blanks about a mandrel includes blank feeding grippers which feed the blanks towards and past their correct position adjacent the mandrel, and means for strengthening the blanks and returning them to the correct position, the blank being held by suction during these positioning operations. The apparatus described forms truncated conical cartons having a circular base and rectangular upper end, the latter being closed by continuous folded in extensions engaging a dished bottom. Blanks 1 are fed from a stack (not shown) by a conveyer 3 having grippers 2 to a position to be gripped by arms 7 oscillating about the axis of a shaft 6 and placing the blanks adjacent the mandrel 12 with their leading edge 14 below the position at which they will be applied to the mandrel. As the arms 7 release each blank, it is gripped by suction members 13 and held lightly enough to be straightened and raised by fingers 15. The fingers 15 are adjustably secured on arms 18 pivoted on shafts 19 by a cam operated lever 24, Figs 1, 14. They engage a cut out portion in the blank leading edge. The blank is applied to the mandrel by the advance of a spring loaded member 45 on a carriage 39, members 48 on the carriage folding the blank to U-shape about the mandrel. An arm 52a, Figs 2, 5, folds one free end 61 of the blank against the mandrel where it is held by suction applied through apertures 50. The arm 52a withdraws and an arm 52b folds the other end 62 to overlap the end 61. A member 29 applies pressure to cause previously applied adhesive &c. to secure the seam. The upper end of the carton tube protrudes above the mandrel and a dished bottom 57 is supplied from a channel 58, Fig. 2, for insertion in the tube by a member 60, Fig. 1. The end of the tube is later secured to the bottom by means not described. A series of mandrels are carried on a rotatable member 36 for passage past various forming stations. The mandrel is as described in the Divided Specification 820,050.
