Abstract

13,800. Heybach, F. J. June 7. Paper and like bags, folding down mouths of after filling.-Relates to a machine for closing cartons of the kind in which the flaps are retained in closed position by means of a tongue and slot. The cartons are carried from the filling-mechanism to the folding-device by means of a conveyer, which also controls a clutch on the driving-shaft of the folding-device, and operates this part of the apparatus intermittently. An elevating-plunger 2, Figs. 7 and 8, lifts the carton a into a receiver r, at the upper end of which the folders are situated. These consist of a pair of members 3, 4 mounted on rotatable, shafts 5, 6 respectively, which fold the flaps c, d of the carton. The member 4 has spring fingers 7, which engage the flap d and bend it slightly inwards at the commencement of the folding operation, and at the same time reciprocating folders 8, 9 engage the flaps 6 and fold them inwards beneath the flaps c, d. The carriage 13, Fig. 7, which carries the folder 9, also carries a pair of arms 11, 12, Figs. 7 and 8, of which the arm 11 is fixed to the carriage and the arm 12 is attached to a crank-arm 14 journaled on the carriage. The arm 12 opens the slot in the flap d, and is held against the inside of the flap by a spring 17. After the flaps b have been closed, the members 3, 4 turn inwards and carry the flaps c, d into engagement with the arms 11, 12 respectively. A tongue-inserting member 19 next turns about its shaft 20, and, engaging the tongue e on the flap c, deflects it downwards, at the same time pressing against the flap d and opening the slot f as shown. After the slot is opened, the members 8, 9, and the arms 11, 12 are withdrawn, and during this movement a cam 21 fixed to the shaft 20 engages the crank-arm 14, thus rotating the arm 12 and preventing it from cutting the flap. The members 3, 4 and the member 19 continue their rotary movement, thus inserting the tongue in the slot and folding the flaps. In order to assist the tongues in maintaining the flaps c, d in a closed position, a pair of creasing-members 22, 23 mounted in rotatable shafts 24, 25 are provided. These members pinch the folded corners of the flaps against the ribs 28, 29, respectively, formed on the folding members. After the folding operation is completed, the plunger descends, and the carton is pushed by the succeeding carton on to a moving belt which conveys it to any point. An ejector 30 descends when the folding is completed, to ensure the removal of the carton from the receiver.
