Abstract

820,031. Windscreen washers. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Aug. 21, 1957 [Sept. 6, 1956], No. 27315/56. Class 138(1). [Also in Group XXXVII] A switch comprises a unitary frame with parallel arms in which a rotatable spindle is axially movable to control a windscreen washer pump or control valve, a movable contact rotatable with but axially movable relatively to the spindle, and a spring biassing the movable contact in a direction for engagement with a fixed contact so that rotation of the spindle by controlling these contacts can control a windscreen wiper. As shown, the frame 10 supports spindle 20 and an insulating plate 14 carrying "fixed" contacts 29, 30 which are normally engaged. The movable contact 25 has a circular hole for the spindle which has a shaped portion engaged by a coupling member 22 having ears 23 engaging holes 24 in the contact 25 which is thus coupled to the spindle. The contact 25 is located in each of three positions by a lug 28 engageable with depressions in a strip 31 fixed to the insulator 14. Rotation of the contact 25 from the "off" position, Fig. 4, to position "A", brings a lug 27 thereon into contact with contact 29, further rotation to position "F" maintaining this contact but camming contacts 29, 30 apart. The motor may be arranged to run at a slow speed in position "A", and at a fast speed in position "F". One end of spindle 20, carries a knob and the other end is formed with a groove 35 engaging a hole in a spring-pressed lever 36 which limits axial movement of the spindle to the right, Fig. 1, by engagement with the arm 12 of the frame 10. In a modification, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), a two part coupling is used in place of part 22.
