Class 142(2) Weft in inactive shuttles is held by retaining devices operated in synchronism with the change-box motion and is released when each shuttle is about to be picked. In one embodiment (Fig. 3) a slide c engages an abutment at beat-up and causes a finger c<SP>1</SP> to move across the shuttle box mouth and deflect a weft from a shuttle that has arrived in the box into a notch a in a disc A. A shaft A<SP>3</SP> is turned in synchronism with a rotary shuttle box and through gears A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>1</SP> a weft in the slot a is moved round and held between a pad B<SP>5</SP> and a spring clip encircling the pad. Similarly, a shuttle which is to be picked has its weft positioned in the slot a and thereby released from the pad and the clip. When the shuttles are not frequently changed, the slide c is put out of operation until a shuttle is about to be changed. In another embodiment (Fig. 8), applicable to vertically moving boxes, the wefts are held between wires do carried by pins d<SP>2</SP>, the pins being turned by push rods d actuated by cams a<SP>5</SP> in the shaft A<SP>3</SP> to grip and to release the wefts. A shoulder d<SP>5</SP> on the slay is provided which co-operates with the uppermost wire d<SP>4</SP> to grip the weft from the top box.
