Abstract
A gas-phase reactor comprises an elongated vessel having parallel side walls and a first end and a second end, the second end being closed; a baffle substantially central in the vessel between the ends to provide a free gas space at each end of the vessel, the baffle extending from one side of the vessel to the opposite side and from adjacent the first end toward the second end, said baffle defining with the closed second end a U-shaped gas passage; an inlet pipe extending into the first free gas space from the <PICT:0819102/III/1> <PICT:0819102/III/2> <PICT:0819102/III/3> <PICT:0819102/III/4> first end with its terminal end parallel to and adjacent one side wall to eject gas into the first free gas space; and an outlet pipe at the same end as the inlet pipe adjacent the opposite side wall to remove gases released into the first free gas space from the second leg of the U-shaped gas passage. The baffle may have a perforated support. Preferably the free cross-sectional area at each end of the baffle is approximately the same as the free cross-sectional area of each leg of the U-shaped gas passage. Suitable forms of reactor are shown in the Figures, in which 14 is the inlet pipe, 15 is the outlet pipe, and 16, 17 and 18 are pipes for the supply of reactants and diluent. In Figs. 1 and 1A, 19 is a baffle on a perforated support 21.
