Abstract

A lubricating grease suitable for use in equipment which is subjected to ionising radiation consists of a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil (having a viscosity-gravity constant of at least 0.85) gelled to grease consistency by means of an inorganic gelling agent. The gelling agent may be a colloidal oxide, hydroxide, silicate or carbonate such as silica, alumina, magnesia, calcium oxide and mixtures thereof, or a synthetic zeolite or a natural clay (e.g. a montmorillonite such as bentonite or hectorite). The gelling agent may be waterproofed by incorporating in the grease an anionic, cationic or non-ionic surface-active agent, especially a partial fatty acid amide of an ammonia-epichlorohydrin condensation product. Alternatively, the gelling agent to be used in preparing the grease may first be coated with a polymeric waterproofing agent such as an aminoplast, a phenoplast or a polymeric silicon compound. Polymerizable silicon compounds which may be used in preparing the waterproofing agent are alkyl halo silanes, alkyl alkoxy silanes and alkoxy amino silanes. Where the gelling agent is colloidal silica, it may be waterproofed by conversion to an estersil (i.e. by surface esterification with an alcohol). Those greases gelled with hydrophobic silica are improved by the addition of a minor proportion of a 1,2- or 1,3-diol such as neopentyl glycol, 1,2-heptandiol or 1,2-octandiol. In examples, mineral lubricating oil is gelled with colloidal silica which has been waterproofed with polymerized dimethyl dichlorosilane, methyl triethoxysilane, trimethyl ethoxysilane or dimethyl diethoxysilane, or with a partial tall oil acid amide of an ammonia-epichlorohydrin condensation product. In further examples, mineral lubricating oil is gelled with an estersil, an optional ingredient of the grease being neopentylglycol, 1,2-heptandiol or 1,2-octandiol.
