Abstract

818,792. Broaching. WEATHERLEY OILGEAR Ltd. June 7, 1956 [June 9, 1955], No. 16656/55. Class 83 (3). A horizontal or vertical broaching machine comprises a drum-shaped rotatable workholding table 4 having work-holding fixtures 6 on its peripheral surface. Each face of the sixsided drum 4 has two such automatically or manually-operated fixtures 6 spaced alternately as shown in Fig. 3. The clamps consist of pivoted arms 9, 10 operated through pushrods by cam faces on hydraulic rams 7, 8, or of wedge-pieces driven home by external cams as the drum rotates. The rams 7, 8 release the workpieces over a shoot 19. The drum is indexed at each end of a working stroke by an hydraulic piston 11 and ratchet means 13 and it is held in working position by tapered-pins 14, 15, operated by pistons 16, 17. The hydraulically-operated tool-slide 2 carries two sets of broaches A, B, and C, D, which work on the downward and upward-strokes respectively. The drum 4 may be mounted on a slide movable to-and-from the tool-slide so that the work may be withdrawn if cutting on the downstroke only is desired. The drum may be fed axially between strokes. The indexing and withdrawal of the drum and the work-clamping means may be operated hydraulically, electrically or mechanically. The work may be supplied by a conveyer.
