Abstract

818,782. Speed measurement. FORGES ET ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE JEUMONT. Nov. 27, 1956 [Dec. 30, 1955; March 7, 1956], No. 36213/56. Class 40(1). [Also in Group XXX] The speed of movement of a body of ferro-magnetic material relative to another object (where the body is a track on which the object moves or a frame in which the body rotates) is measured by impressing a succession of magnetic marks on the body and sensing these marks by suitable responsive .means, each mark being made as a result of the pick-up of a signal by the responsive means. In Fig. 1, the recording head 4 makes a mark on a railway track 2 which is picked up by the reproducing head 5 when it has travelled the distance m. The receiver 9 detects this signal and passes an impulse to the oscillator 8 to cause a fresh mark to be made. The indicator 11 measures the frequency of the signals and thus gives a speed of the vehicle relative to the track. A further oscillator 12 continuously generates signals of very low frequency (e.g. 1 c/s) the failure of which de-energizes relay 14 and indicates a fault. These signals also initiate the generation of the marks. Erase heads 6, 7 prevent false pick-up due to stray magnetization of the track. The indicator may be used to control signals, automatic safety devices or speed-regulating means. The indicator 11 may show the mean amplitude of the pulses. When the direction of travel of the vehicle is reversed the connections to heads 4, 5 are interchanged. For measuring the speed of rotation of an object (Fig. 2), the magnetizing head 4A, pickup head 5A and erase head 6A are mounted on a removable non-magnetic yoke 20 and can move radially in sleeves 21, 22, 23. The rotor may be a flywheel, disc, shaft or ring, and if non- magnetic it may be coated, or there may be attached a ring or disc of iron. A plurality of erase heads can be used.
