Abstract

1476418 Measuring angular velocity electrically PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Oct 1975 [9 Oct 1974] 40777/75 Heading G1N [Also in Division H2] The angular velocity of the shaft of a cassette player/recorder which is driven through a magnetic clutch is determined by the frequency of the voltage induced in a coil located near the rotating magnet. The machine comprises two shafts 2, 3, Fig. 1, carrying reels 9, 10 with a tape 6 extending between them. The reel 10 is driven by a motor 18, pulley 17 and belt 16 through a magnetic clutch 13 consisting of a soft iron ring 24 on a disc 15, coupling with a permanent magnet ring 20 on a disc 14, which has a series of magnet poles of alternating polarity round its circumference. A pick-up coil 26 located near the rotating magnet 20 generates a pulse train whose frequency is proportional to the angular velocity of the reel 10. The coil 26 may alternatively be a Hall plate or magneto-resistive device.
