Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure the number of tracks in response to the signals of servo- track groups to roughly position a magnetic head, when this head is moving at a high speed, and to accomplish the measurement in response to the respective servo- track signals to finely position the magnetic head when this head is moving at a low speed.
CONSTITUTION: The track group position signals VA and the track position signals VB when a magnetic head 40 is moved from track 10 to track 32 are depicted in the drawing. The signals VA are found to have their polarity changed upon each passage of four tracks. The points P20 and P30 detected at detecting levels VA and VA' indicate that the head 40 has passed through the track group, i.e., four servo- tracks. If the measurement of the track number at a high speed is accomplished in response to the signals VA, the accurate position signals VA can be detected. If the track group to which an object track belongs is detected, the track number measurement is accomplished in response to the position signals VB at a low speed, and the fine control is accomplished in the vicinity of the object track so that the magnetic head can be accurately positioned in the object track.
