Abstract

PURPOSE: To lessen the width of the detecting part of a movement detector and reduce the detection error by dividing a magnetic tape into two tracks, on which N, S patterns are magnetically recorded with different pitches for each track, and placing two detectors on the line perpendicular to the moving direction of said magnetic tape.
CONSTITUTION: A magnetic tape 4 is provided with a track 41 where pole pairs N and S are recorded at a frequency f1 which is a reference at a constant feed speed and a track 42 where pole pairs N and S are recorded at a frequency f2 which linearly changes in unit length as the position changes. Magnetism detectors are provided for the tracks 41 and 42 to detect the movement of the magnetic tape. For example, the detection signal f1' of the track 41 is frequency-demodulated 10 to detect the moving speed V of the magnetic tape. The detection signal f2' of the other track 42 is also frequency-demodulated 7 and multiplied 9 by the output 1/f1' of a periodically proportional output circuit 8 in order to detect the position X.
