Abstract
818,443. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Sept. 19, 1957, No. 29488/57. Class 35. Liquid flows from end to end of a machine through a hollow shaft, is passed to a bearing and thence into a stator passage to flow from end to end. The aircraft generator shown has on its hollow shaft 5 a field member 11, 12 fed from exciter rotor winding 17 via a rectifier 18, 19 and the permanent magnet rotor 20 of an auxiliary generator for control purposes and a casing 1, 2 of magnesium or aluminium is cast about preformed cooling passages including helical coils 31, 35 near the stator cores of the exciter and generator respectively. Oil or engine fuel can pass from the driving end through a duct in the casing to passage 44 thence into and along the stationary tube 26 over which it returns and passes to bearing 4 and from space 40 through the helical coils 31, 35 in series to the other end of the machine. The liquid could alternatively, enter the hollow shaft at the driving end 6.
