Abstract

818,424. Electric resistances. BRUSH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Nov. 18, 1957 [Nov. 21, 1956], No. 35638/56. Class 37. A carbon resistor comprises carbon blocks assembled in stack formation with metal cooling fins interposed between adjacent blocks. The blocks and elements are constructed and arranged so that a cooling fluid can flow through an opening in each block, and through spaces provided between blocks. In the embodiment described, carbon blocks 1 and metal cooling fins 2, containing opening 5 and 4 respectively, are assembled into a stack such that the openings in the blocks and plates form a coaxial bore through the stack. Metal spacing pieces 3 are attached to one side of each cooling fin, and provide radial apertures between successive blocks. Cooling fluid is introduced through the hole 11, and flows upwards through the bore in the cooling fins and the blocks, and also radially outwards through the spaces between the blocks. The assembly is clamped together by means of four bolts 6 and clamping plates 8 and 9.
