Abstract
Adhesive compositions comprise (1) a resin component, (2) a plasticiser component, and (3) a component of inert particles; (1) comprising a copolymer of a vinyl halide, a vinyl ester of a saturated fatty acid and an aliphatic alpha, beta-mono-olefinic carboxylic acid, the amount of carboxylic acid in the polymer being 0.1 to 4 per cent by weight of the polymer, said copolymer constituting 50 to 100 per cent of (1), the balance (if any) being a compatible vinyl polymeric material; (2) consisting of a plasticiser for (1) which has a boiling-point above 200 DEG C. and is fluid at about 25 DEG C.; and (3) is small discrete particles of silica aerogel not chemically or physically altered by mixing with (1) and (2); the proportion of (1) being 60 to 80 per cent by weight of (1) and (2), and (3) being 1 to 20 per cent by weight of (1), (2) and (3). The copolymer may be a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetatemaleic acid copolymer, and the compatible polymeric material may be a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer. Specified plasticisers are di - 2 - ethyl - hexyl phthalate, dibutoxyethyl phthalate, diethoxy-ethoxyethyl phthalate, dibutoxyethyl adipate, dimethylcyclohexyl adipate, dimethoxyethyl sebacate and o-cresyl-p-toluene sulphonate. The compositions may contain waxes, dyes and stabilizers. The compositions may be thinned by adding volatile organic solvents, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone and ether alcohols, and diluents, e.g. benzene, toluene and xylene, and coated on to metal foils, e.g. aluminium foils, which may be bonded under heat and pressure.
