Abstract

818,088. Defibrating wood chips &c. INTERNATIONAL BASIC ECONOMY CORPORATION. June 5, 1956 [Dec. 1, 1955], No. 17322/56. Class 96. Wood chips &c. are compressed to form a plug to withstand steam pressure as they are advanced from a feed opening 12, by a horizontal screw-conveyer 11 in a casing 9, the plug being later broken up to aid in defibrating the wood &c., as by a vertical screw-conveyer which is in the form of separate flights 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d, &c. on a shaft 13. The wood &c. may then be moved horizontally by a further screw-conveyer, also in separate flights and continually forced through an outlet opening of adjustable size. At the outlet, the release of pressure allows occluded steam to expand rapidly and disrupt the wood &c. The casings for the lower screwconveyers may be made of bars &c. presenting interior surfaces which tend to cut the wood or resist its rotation in the casing, thereby aiding the defibration. The bars &c. may also have small clearances between them to allow expressed water and fines to escape at desired regions. Alternatively the casing may be solid, and fluted longitudinally along its inner surface. In a modification, the casing includes cylindrical and converging portions, with different arrangements of bars, and different screw-to-casing clearances. Heating or cooling media may be circulated about the casings or within hollow screw press shafts. Compression of the woodchips &c. may alternatively be effected by a piston and cylinder.
