Abstract

817,935. Moulding sparking plugs. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Aug. 1, 1956 [Aug. 1, 1955], No. 23749/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups XXIII and XXVII] A cartridge for a low tension sparking plug is made by placing the electrodes 1, 2 on a mounting, filling the space between the electrodes with an insulation compound 3 in granular or powder form, the compound having the following composition by weight : PbO 50-90 per cent., B2O3 5-30 per cent., SiO2 0-20 per cent., ZiO2 0-10 per cent., Al2O3 0-20 per cent., ZnO 0-10 per cent., alkaline oxides 0-2 per cent. and heating the assembly to a temperature between 500‹C. and 900‹C. in a non-reducing atmosphere which contains not more than 2 per cent. oxygen. A number of specific compositions are quoted in the Specification. The mounting is of steel and comprises members 5, 6. A steel plate 7 may obturate the bore in the electrode 1 or the bore may be stopped by filling it with silver, copper or an alloy having a base of these metals. The cement or powder is introduced at 8 and can be packed by vibration. A current of argon is introduced into the furnace chamber and the heating carried out. The cement is prepared by heating, for example by electric induction to 850‹C. It is poured, cooled and then crushed. Crystal glass may be used in preparing the cement. Alternatively the cement may be prepared by melting together all the constituents other than alumina grinding the mass obtained and mixing it with calcined alumina in powdered form. In a modified method of manufacture after positioning the electrodes in the mounting they can be rendered fast with one another by forcing into the spark gap a small mica cylinder constituted by a roll of thin foil. Specification 802,011 [Group XXVII] is referred to.
