Abstract
A sparking plug assembly comprises a block of ceramic composition consisting substantially wholly of a fired and compacted mixture of zinc oxide with not more than 20 per cent. of one or more oxides of the metals of Groups Ib, IVb, Vb, VIIa or VIII of the Periodic Table, the block having electrodes secured thereto with a gap on the block between the electrodes. Oxides specified are manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, tin, antimony, lead and bismuth. The oxides are mixed together with an organic dispersant, e.g. an aqueous solution of gum arabic, dried, screened, pressed to shape and sintered, or preferably-to reduce shrinkage on sintering -are, after being shaped prefired at 50 DEG -150 DEG C. below sintering temperature, ground, mixed with an organic binder, e.g. butyl methacrylate, pressed to shape and sintered. Specification 700,756 is referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the addition of up to 70 per cent. of the oxide other than that of zinc.
