Abstract
817,879. Fusible cut-outs. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 21, 1958 [Feb. 25, 1957], No. 6215/57. Class 38 (1). A cartridge fuse has a cylindrical insulating body 1 of ceramic material with pressed-on inner end caps 2, 3 and thin silver strip fuse elements 4 passing through central holes in the end caps to which they are secured by spot-welding at 5 and by soldering at 7 in such a way as to provide upstanding bights 6 between the points 5 and 7. Outer end caps 8, 9, having connecting lugs 10, 11, are forced on to the inner end caps 2, 3 until they deform the bights 6 making a good electrical contact with them. The body 1 is filled with powdered silica or other arc quenching material which surrounds the fuse elements 4. The elements 4 may each be shaped in the neighbourhood of the fusing region so as to produce a particular fuse characteristic. The portions 6 of the elements 4 may be curved in two directions in order to stiffen them. Instead of having a number of separate strip elements 4 the fuse may have a single element which may be tubular with suitable holes around its central portion to provide a number of parallel connected fusing regions.
