Abstract
Apparatus for the production of hardened or tempered surfaces on a metal workpiece by electric spark discharges between the workpiece and an electrode includes one or more asymmetric couples in the spark discharge circuit which allow flow of current only in a direction giving positive polarity to the electrode and negative polarity to the workpiece. During sparking metal from an electrode of appropriate composition is transferred to the workpiece surface. The asymmetric couple may be a one-way selenium rectifier or full-wave rectification as described in Specification 756,727 [Group XXII] may be used. Automatic feed devices maintain the spark gap and the electrode may be vibrated by an electromagnetic vibrator whose frequency and/or amplitude are adjusted automatically in dependence upon the circuit parameters. The spark gap may be shielded by an inert atmosphere or by an atmosphere containing elements which it is desired to introduce into the workpiece surface.
