Abstract
Acetylene is separated from a gas containing it by treating the gas with a solvent selective for acetylene and higher acetylenes, which solvent has present therein a compound of the formula <FORM:0816588/IV (b)/1> in which R1 and R2 are H atoms or alkyl radicals of 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The compound may be pyridine, 2-methyl-5-ethyl pyridine, 2-picoline, 3-picoline, or 4-picoline and may be used in an amount of 0.01 to 5.0 per cent based on the total weight of the solution. In examples, in which butyrolactone is used as the solvent, from 0.01 to 1.5 per cent of the compound is added. This compound prevents the precipitation of polymers of the higher acetylenes.
