Abstract

Friction elements are bonded with the reaction product of a thermo-settable polynuclear phenolic resin containing free phenolic groups and phosphoro or boro linkages and formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor either alone or together with another bonding agent. The polynuclear phenolic resins are made by reacting a polyhydroxy aromatic compound with boric acid, an inorganic phosphoric acid or a polyfunctional chlorine derivative, e.g. phosphorus oxychloride or an inorganic halide of formula RPX3, where R is oxygen or sulphur, P is phosphorus and X is halogen. Polyphosphochloronitride is an additional bonding agent specified, In the examples: (1) asbestos fibre, brass chips. kieselguhr, cardolite dust and hexamethylene tetramine are mixed with a resin made from phosphorus oxychloride, phenol and hydroquinone and heat cured to produce a friction element; (2) as in (1) substituting rubber-like polyphosphochloronitride for the cardolite dust; whilst in Examples (3) and (4), a resin made from phenol, hydroquinone, resorcinol, boric acid and water is mixed with (3) asbestos, rubber-like polyphosphochloronitride particles, iron oxide and hexamethylene tetramine, and (4) asbestos, oily and rubber-like polyphosphochloronitride, iron oxide and hexamethylene tetramine, the mixtures being cured to form friction elements.
