Abstract
A composition for friction facing material, e.g. for clutches or brakes of vehicles consists of 55 to 90% iron, 5-30% graphite and 5-24% thermosetting resin. The composition as it is cured may be simultaneously attached to a backing, e.g. a brake shoe, if desired with the use of a resin adhesive which is cured at the same time as the binder resin. Thermosetting resins mentioned are phenol-formaldehyde, melamine, silicone or aniline resin. Other friction modifying agents, e.g. molybdenum disulphide, lead; silica, silicon carbide, zircon (ZrSiO4), white cast iron grit, alumina, or molybdenum disilicide may be incorporated with the graphite. The ingredients, preferably powdered, are mixed, compacted by high pressure and then cured, if desired at lower pressure, and at a temperature below 343 DEG C. Stearic acid may be added as a mould lubricant. Suitable compositions are (1) 63.8% powdered iron, 23% powdered graphite, 9% powdered phenol-formaldehyde resin, 4% ZrSiO4, 0.2% stearic acid; (2)-for high co-efficient of friction, 72% Fe, 18% graphite, 9% resin, 0.8% Al2O3, 0.2% stearic acid, and (3)-for lower wear of the facing, 67.8% Fe, 23% graphite, 9% resin, 0.2% stearic acid.
