Abstract

In a friction element, e.g. a brake or clutch lining, the bonding agent comprises an oily polyphosphochloronitride of low molecular weight either alone or in combination with another binding agent. Instead of, or in addition to, the oily polyphosphochloronitride, the bonding agent may comprise a low molecular weight polyphosphochloronitride modified by the reaction thereof with a polyhydroxy organic compound, e.g. ethylene glycol, glycerol, resorcinol, or hydroquinone, and/or with a phenolic resin, or a mixture of one or more polyphosphochloronitrides with one or more modified polyphosphochloronitrides. The oily polyphosphochloronitride is in a partially polymerized state and the polymerization completed in situ. The friction element may also include a polyphosphochloronitride in the form of discrete rubber-like particles as a friction modifier with or without other filler or fillers. In examples the mixes comprise (1) asbestos, oily polyphosphochloronitride, ferric oxide; (2) asbestos, oily polyphosphochloronitride, ferric oxide, and litharge; (3) asbestos, oily polyphosphochloronitride, ferric oxide, litharge and hydroquinone; (4) asbestos, brass chips, kieselguhr, cashew nut shell dust, barium sulphate, hexamethylene tetramine, and a modified polymer obtained by heating together oily polyphosphochloronitride with hydroquinone; (5) and (6) asbestos, oily polyphosphochloronitride, discrete particles of rubber-like polyphosphochloronitride, ferric oxide, and litharge; (7) asbestos, oily polyphosphochloronitride, discrete particles of rubber-like polyphosphochloronitride, iron oxide, and hexamethylene tetramine; and (8) asbestos, brass chips, kieselguhr, discrete particles of rubber-like polyphosphochloronitride, barium sulphate, and a modified polymer as in Example 4.ALSO:In a friction element, e.g. a brake or clutch lining, the binding agent comprises an oily polyphosphochloronitride of low molecular weight either alone or in combination with another binding agent.
