Abstract

A hardenable composition comprises a phenol-formaldehyde novolak resin and from 50 to 350 parts by weight per 100 parts of resin of a salt prepared by reacting hexamethylene tetramine with at least one oxyacid of sulphur. The preferred acid is sulphuric acid but sulphurous acid may also be used. Phenol-formaldehyde resins other than those derived from phenol itself may be used, e.g. those derived from cresol xylenols or cashew nutshell liquid. A friction element may be prepared by curing a mixture comprising 15 to 30% by weight of the above hardenable composition and 85% to 70% filler. The filler preferably contains asbestos fibre in amount of at least 30% by weight based on the weight of the element and may also contain other fillers such as barytes, magnesia, brass, zinc or rotton stone. An example describes the curing of a composition containing the hardenable composition of the invention, asbestos fibre and barytes to provide friction elements which may be used as brake linings or disc brake elements (see Division F2).
