816,533. Electrolytically purifying alkyl aryl sulphonates. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. May 27, 1957 [Oct. 10, 1956], No. 16790/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. Alkyl aryl sulphonic acids and salts thereof are bleached by electrolysing aqueous solutions thereof to which have been added a metal or ammonium halide. Typically, the applied potential is from 1 to 10 volts using a platinum anode and a current density of 0.05 to 1.5 amps./sq. dm. The metal halides may be chlorides of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, ammonium chloride, magnesium chloride, cupric chloride, maganous chloride, ferric chloride, or sodium fluoride.
