Abstract
816,184. Automatic position control systems. MASCHINENFABRIK GOEBEL G.m.b.H. March 20, 1957 [March 20, 1956], No. 9208/57. Class 38 (4). In a method of controlling longitudinal web registration, the web is periodically stopped and clamped and the clamp support moved in a direction to correct the error. The web 1 is fed through drive rollers 2, 3 under a jockey roller 4, across a table 6 and through feed rollers 7, 8 to a processing machine 9. Signals from a photoelectric scanner or other type of web registering apparatus 11 are fed to control unit 12. During processing in machine 9 the web is arrested by clamps 10 and rollers 8 are raised to remove the drive. As rollers 2, 3 are in continuous motion the loop under roller 4 increases during this part of the operation, but decreases again when the web is fed into machine 9 prior to the next operation. The registration detector may operate just before or just after the web is stopped. In the former case, the web being in motion, a time comparison is made between signal pulses initiated by marks on the web and by a rotary contact device 13 in the machine 9. In the latter case the scanner detects a position error by the differing illuminations of a photocell. The error signal from unit 12 energizes one or other of electromagnetic clutches 15, 25 coupled to constant speed motor 17. This transmits drive through worm and nut mechanism 20-22 and leverage 24 to the table 6 which moves correctively along slides 14. A proportional movement is imparted to pivoted roller 4 to allow for the resulting web travel, and is also given to the differential cage 29 via rod 28. The latter movement alters variable ratio gearing 33'and so adjusts the speed of drive rollers 2, 3 to further compensate for web movement and to remove the source of the error. To limit the travel of table 6 switches 39, 40 are suitably placed and engaged by a projection 41. They energize a motor 42 which adjusts the driving roller speed so that an error of opposite sign will occur and cause the table to return to its normal position.
