Abstract

A wetting composition comprises (a) a watersoluble salt, suitably an alkali metal or triethanolamine salt, of an N:N-dibenzylaminobenzene sulphonic acid of the formula <FORM:0815858/IV (c)/1> wherein the -SO3H group is in the 3- or 4-position relative to the dibenzylamino group; and (b) a practically water-insoluble neutral triester of phosphoric acid in an amount 15-70 per cent by weight of (a), calculated as the free acid. The triester may suitably be a trialkyl phosphate in which each alkyl group has 4-8 carbon atoms, or a tri-alkoxyalkyl phosphate of which each alkylene group contains 2 carbon atoms and each alkoxy group 3-7 carbon atoms. Esters mentioned are tri-n-butyl, tri-iso-butyl, tri-iso-amyl, tri-n-butoxyethyl, and tri-isobutoxyethyl phosphates. The compositions usually also contain, as a diluent, water or a sparingly volatile organic liquid which is miscible with water, such as an aliphatic alcohol containing 3-8 carbon atoms or a glycol, for example propyl, iso-propyl or capryl alcohol, or ethylene or diethylene glycol. Tripolyphosphates, and salts of ethylene diamine tetracetic acid or nitrilotriacetic acid, may also be incorporated, and the compositions may be produced as liquids or pastes.
