Abstract

815,739. Fishing reels. HAY, G. D. Aug. 29, 1956 [Aug. 3, 1955], No. 22321/55. Class 48. A fishing reel comprises a back plate 12 supporting a spindle 11, a spool rotatable on the spindle and having a ratchet wheel 14, a stud 15 slidable in a slot (not shown) in the back plate between a check and a non-check position, a pawl 18 incorporating two operative portions and a kidney-shaped slot 20 for locating the pawl on the stud 15 in either of two alternative positions and a spring 21 adapted to cooperate with the pawl, the arrangement being that with the stud in the check position one of the operative portions of the pawl co-operates with the ratchet wheel to provide a right or left-hand check. The shank of the stud engages in one or other of the end portions 20a, 20b of the kidney-shaped slot 20 in the pawl and the spring 21 engages with one or other of two edge portions 18c, 18d of the pawl. The edges of the ratchet-engaging portions of the pawl are so disposed that a greater check is given to one direction of rotation than to the other. The spring 21 is anchored at one end to the back plate 12 and its other end co-operates with an eccentric element 22 mounted on the back plate and capable of angular adjustment to vary the action of the spring on the pawl. The eccentric element is locked by a screw passing through the back plate into a threaded bore in the element. When the stud is in the non-check position the pawl is out of engagement with the ratchet wheel.
