Abstract
815,620. Welding by pressure. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Aug. 3, 1956 [Sept. 26, 1955 (2)], No. 23976/56. Class 83 (4). In a method of butt-welding two tubes coaxially, the closely spaced ends are heated to welding temperature and welded by axial pressure in vacuo, while enclosed within a small annular chamber. Apparatus for butt-welding tubes 10 and 12 without the presence of oxygen comprises annular members 22 and 24 of heatresistant material, such as asbestos glued to paper, cemented to the walls of the tubes at 16, 26 and 28 to form an air-tight chamber 30. Annuli 14 with radial flanges 20 are cemented together to form the annulus 22, the flanges projecting slightly beyond the ends of their respective tubes 10 and 12. The chamber 30 is connected to an exhausted container 32 many times its size so that on opening a valve 40 the chamber 30 is rapidly evacuated and collapses towards the tubes. Heat is then supplied by the induction coil 58 or other means and the tubes welded by axial pressure. In a modification the chamber 30 is formed by rigid annuli 42, 52 of a heat-resistant material, e.g. a ceramic and the seal is effected by inflatable toroidal tubes 44 and 54. In a further modification the member 42 may be a solid cylinder.
