Abstract

Refractory articles are obtained by shaping a paste of electrically conductive silicides and/or borides of Group IV to VI metals with a liquid hydrolysable silicic acid ester or a solution of such an ester, hydrolysing, drying and sintering. Pre-sintering may be carried out in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at not above 1450 DEG C. Final sintering is either completely in a non-oxidizing atmosphere or partly in an oxidizing atmosphere, the temperature in either case being between 1500 DEG and 1800 DEG C. The article has a coating of a continuous skeleton of silica, the silica being 0,5-20 per cent by weight. Optional additions are silicon carbide or one or more of thoria, ceria, zirconia, alumina, beryllia, magnesia, silica and chromium oxide.
