Abstract

A stable aqueous alkaline solution for the production of ice colours comprises (1) an ice colour diazo compound solubilized and stabilized against azoic coupling on the alkaline side by reaction with an organic amine containing at least one solubilizing group and at least one replaceable hydrogen atom attached to an amino nitrogen atom; (2) an ice colour coupling component; and (3) 0.5-5 per cent by weight of a water-soluble polymeric material containing at least 20 per cent by weight of a polymerized N-vinyl lactam. The water-soluble polymeric material is preferably a homopolymer of an N-vinyl lactam, especially polymerized N-vinyl-2 pyrrolidone. The organic amine may be sarcosine, N-methyl taurine, 4-sulpho-2-amino-benzoic acid, 5 - sulpho - 2 - ethylaminobenzoic acid, or 5 - sulpho - 2 - methyl - aminobenzoic acid. Many diazo compounds and coupling components are specified. The solutions may contain 5-50 per cent of an organic solvent, e.g. an alcohol, and may be used for printing after addition of a thickening agent. U.S.A.
