Abstract

Articles, e.g. filaments, films or buttons, of polymeric carboxylic acid esters or polymeric ethers such as cellulose esters, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl esters and polyvinyl acetals, if desired containing free hydroxyl groups, are coloured by applying an organic solvent solution of a soluble dyestuff and a compound of the formula <FORM:0779219/IV(b)/1> in which Y = a divalent aliphatic radical having terminal carbon atoms, having all of its hydrogen atoms attached to carbon and having a chain length of 2 or 3 atoms, all of the chain atoms of the radical being selected from the group oxygen, sulphur and tertiary nitrogen, X = oxygen or sulphur and R and R1 = alkyl radicals. Suitable compounds are N : N1 - bis - (alkoxymethyl) - ethylene ureas, N : N1 - bis - (alkoxymethyl) - urons and tetrahydro1 : 3 - bis - (alkoxymethyl) - 5 - alkyl - 2 - 5 - triazones and the corresponding compounds containing sulphur in place of oxygen in the carbonyl group, several of which are specified. Specified dyestuffs are the organic solvent-soluble cellulose acetate dyes and the oil-soluble acid dyes. Suitable organic solvents are toluene, benzene and a mixture of toluene and methyl isobutyl ketone with isopropanol or with isopropyl acetate. The impregnated articles are preferably heat-treated, particularly if they contain free hydroxyl groups whereby reaction between the hydroxyl groups and the compound is accelerated. An acid or acid-reacting catalyst such as phosphoric, hydrochloric, sulphuric, oxalic or p - toluene - sulphonic acids, ammonium or zinc chlorides, amine hydrochlorides and mixtures of amine hydrochlorides with formaldehyde may be applied to the article before, simultaneously with or after the solution. The solution may be applied to a film by printing. Numerous examples are given.
