Abstract
A polymerization catalyst comprises an organo-aluminium compound and an unsaturated halogen compound containing at least one double or triple C-C bond. The organo-aluminium compound may be aluminium triethyl, aluminium tri-n-propyl, aluminium tri-isobutyl, aluminium diethyl chloride or aluminium di-iso-butyl hydride. The unsaturated halogen compound may be vinyl chloride, allyl chloride, methallyl chloride, trichloroethylene, 2-chlorobutadiene-1,3 or dichloroethylene. An olefinic hydrocarbon to be polymerized is mixed with the organo-aluminium compound prior to, concurrently with or immediately after the addition of the halogen compound, in the presence of a solvent such as iso-octane or a light petroleum distillate, at about 0 DEG C. In examples, aluminium diethyl chloride and allyl chloride are used to prepare a butadiene polymer, a styrene-butadiene copolymer, and a styrene polymer.ALSO:Olefinic hydrocarbons are polymerized by contact with an organo-aluminium compound and an unsaturated halogen compound containing at least one double or triple C-C bond. The organo-aluminium compound may be aluminium triethyl, aluminium tri-n-propyl, aluminium triiso-butyl, aluminium diethyl chloride or aluminium di-iso-butyl hydride. The unsaturated halogen compound may be vinyl chloride, allyl chloride, methallyl chloride, trichloroethylene, 2 - chlorobutadiene - 1,3 or dichloroethylene. Olefinic hydrocarbons which may be polymerized include ethylene, propylene, butylenes, styrene, methyl and ethyl styrenes, chlorostyrenes, vinyl chloride, butadiene1,3 and 2-methyl-butadiene. The olefinic hydrocarbon is mixed with the organo-aluminium compound prior to, concurrently with or immediately after the addition of the halogen compound, in the presence of a solvent such as iso-octane or a light petroleum distillate, at about 0 DEG C. In examples, aluminium diethyl chloride and allyl chloride are used to prepare a butadiene polymer, a styrene-butadiene copolymer, and a styrene polymer.
