Abstract

In the hydrofining of mixtures of benzene hydrocarbons, especially crude benzol, in which the starting material is pretreated at a lower temperature, of at least 200 DEG C., under lower pressure than during hydrofining to form polymerization products, the benzene hydrocarbons are distilled off from the polymerization products in a separating column by heating the mixture before it enters the column exclusively with waste heat from the hydrofining reaction. Such waste heat may also be used in the preliminary polymerization treatment, and for heating the hydrocarbon vapours and the hydrogen or hydrogen-containing gas before or after they are mixed together to bring them to hydrofining temperature. The heat necessary to start the reaction is supplied by passing the gases and vapours through a tube heater, which is cut out when the exothermic hydrofining reaction starts.
