Abstract

A method of treating crude benzene and other impure aromatic hydrocarbons prior to catalytic pressure refining comprises evaporating the material in presence of hydrogen (or a gas containing it), leaving a high-boiling residue and passing the hydrocarbon vapour/hydrogen mixture, with or without further heating, over a molybdenum-containing catalyst at a point separate from the evaporator so as to at least partially hydrogenate the polymerizable fraction of hydrocarbon vapour.
