In apparatus for mixing, emulsifying, disintegrating, wetting, &c. of substances, a rotatable mixing, &c. drum 1 supports rotatably in flanges 3, 3 a shaft 4 carrying a rotor 2 which is driven independently of the mixing drum, the rotor having a charging angle cc, Fig. 3, of less than 30 degrees, the charging angle being formed between the tangent at the base point of the shortest distance from the drum to the rotor and a line through the same point which is tangential to the circle of the rotor. The mixing drum 1 has attached to it, at both sides, shafts 16, 8 rotatably mounted in bearings 17, 11 supported on brackets 18, 10, the shaft 16 being connected by means of a coupling 19 to a worm gear 20 driven by a motor 21a. The rotor 2 is rotated by means of a wheel 6 fixed to the shaft 4, the wheel 6 being driven by V-belts from a pulley 7 mounted rotatably on the shaft 8, the pulley 7 being driven through V-belts by a motor 12 fixed on the bracket 10. A counterweight 23 and a pressure valve 23<SP>1</SP> are provided on the drum 1. In a modification the driving mechanism for the drum is situated on the same side of the apparatus as the driving mechanism for the rotor, both driving mechanisms being driven by a single motor and variable gearing being included individually to control the speed and direction of rotation of the rotor and the drum. The drum is double-walled for the passage therebetween of a heating or cooling medium introduced through the shaft 16 which is hollow for this purpose, and the shaft 8 is also hollow for the extraction or introduction of substances from or into the drum, for the insertion of a wire carrying electric current to a heater element in the drum, or for the insertion of a measuring device into the drum which, in this modification, is provided with a filling hopper.
