664,495. Centrifugal machines. STIENEN, E. A. Feb. 23, 1948 [Dec. 27, 1944], No. 5325/48. Class 23 [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXIV] In a hydraulic driving system for a machine comprising in combination a reversible electric motor 17, Fig. 1, a stationary housing 22 filled with liquid, a pair of co-operating discs 32, 33, Fig. 2, rotatable in the housing, vanes 34, 35 provided on opposing sides of the discs, the vanes being flat members disposed in radial planes and providing for equal driving forces in either direction of rotation of the discs, and switch control means for de-energizing the motor and energizing it for driving rotation in the reverse direction, the motor is arranged on the housing 22 to form a structural unit therewith and has a driving shaft 28 extending into the housing and carrying one of the discs, the other disc being in driving relation with the machine. The spring mounted casing 2, Fig. 1, of a centrifugal separator houses a basket 10 with perforated walls, the basket being journalled upon a shaft 11 and driven from the electric motor 17, secured to the casing 2, through the hydraulic coupling 21 and belting 13<1> The outer edges of the vanes 34, 35 are spaced apart to form a clearance 36. To stop the separator the electric motor is either stopped or reversed and then stopped; the reversing and stopping operatoin may be effected under the control of an automatic time switch. The motor is not provided with a starting rheostat or transformer. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the hydraulic transmission acts as a brake for the separator. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
