Abstract
815,128. Concrete railway sleepers. INDHAR A.B. Oct. 5, 1956 [Oct. 8, 1955], No. 30450/56. Class 104 (2). In a concrete sleeper comprising two concrete blocks 1 joined to one another and held together by at least one tensioned reinforcing rod 3 the concrete blocks 1 are joined to one another by at least one iron or steel tube 2 which surrounds the rod 3 and is filled with a concrete or similar mass to support the rod 3 and to take up stresses between the blocks 1 and possible torsional and/or bending movements between the blocks 1 without permanent deformation. The tubes 2 may be straight as shown in Fig. 1 or corrugated, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. The ends of the tube 2 may be expanded to obtain a wider contact surface with the blocks 1 or they may be non-circular in cross-section. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 two tubes 2 and two rods 3 are used and pressure plates 6 are inserted between the ends of the tubes 2 and the blocks 1. The tubes 2 may be galvanized or subjected to some other rust-preventive treatment.
