Abstract

The invention comprises tetrazaindene compounds having the general formula <FORM:0814823/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents an hydroxyl group or a chlorine atom, R1 represents an alkyl or aromatic group and R2 represents hydrogen or an alkyl or aromatic group, utilizable as photographic anti-fogging agents (see Group XX) which may be prepared by condensing 3-amino-5-hydroxymethyl-1 : 2 : 4-triazole with an acyl ester of the general formula R2CO.CH(R2)COOR3 wherein R1 and R2 are as defined above and R3 represents a lower alkyl group, e.g. methyl or ethyl, whereby products are obtained in which R is a hydroxyl group, and these may be reacted with phosphoryl chloride to obtain the products in which R is a chlorine atom. In the above formul R1 may be, for example, methyl, phenyl or p-methoxyphenyl and R2 may be, for example, methyl, ethyl, phenyl or tolyl. In examples: (1) amino guanidine bicarbonate is refluxed with aqueous glycollic acid in the presence of some nitric acid yielding the glycollic acid salt of 3-amino-5-hydroxy methyl-1 : 2 : 4-triazole which is reacted with ethyl acetoacetate in glacial acetic acid to give 4-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl - 6 - methyl - 1 : 3 : 3a : 7 - tetrazaindene; its hemihydrate is described; (2) the product of (1) is converted into the hemihydrate of the 2-chloromethyl derivative by refluxing with phosphoryl chloride; the anhydrous 2-chloromethyl compound is obtained therefrom by treatment with hydrochloric acid. Other tetrazaindenes of the above general formula are described wherein R1 represents phenyl, R2 is hydrogen and R represents OH or chlorine or wherein R1 is CH3, R2 is C2H5 and R is OH, or wherein R1 is CH3, R2 is phenyl and R is OH.
