Abstract

814,748. Pneumatic springs. SPENCER, MOULTON & CO. Ltd., G. April 8, 1957 [March 6, 1956], No. 7000/56. Class 108(3) In a shock absorber having complementary disc-like circular rubber springs arranged to provide a primary chamber enclosing an hydraulic medium, the hydraulic medium may be displaced under compression into a secondary chamber formed by complementary dished disclike plates of metal or other rigid material, the secondary chamber containing a bag of air or inert gas. Rings 1, Fig. 1, are bonded to metal rings 3, and space 7 is filled with air, nitrogen or other inert gas which may be under pressure. Space 5 is filled with hydraulic fluid. Under compression rubber springs 1 deflect laterally, Fig. 2, forcing hydraulic fluid through holes 10 into the space 7, thus compressing the gas in space flexible container 8. When the applied force is removed the parts return to the position shown in Fig. 1. Resistance to shock increases with velocity of compression and the spring is self damping.
