Abstract

814,679. Commutators for dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Oct. 4, 1957 [Oct. 9, 1956], No. 30807/56. Class 35. [Also in Group XXII] A method of constructing an electrical commutator, in which the undercut insulating spacer strips that separate the commutator segments have narrow longitudinal slots 1 parallel to and adjacent the outer surface of the commutator, with the outer edges of the slots within said surface, comprises assembling the elements and then machining said surface with the outer edges of the segments supported by the material of the spacers lying outside the slots. The assembly is first roughly machined, each spacer being reduced to a line A-A<SP>1</SP> and is then mounted in a clamping means, for example two rings of V-shape cross-section (not shown) which locate'in V-shaped notches in the segments. The commutator is again machined to ensure concentricity with the clamping means and reduce each spacer to a line B-B<SP>1</SP> along the outer edge of the slot. The slot being closed at each end, the insulation extends to the periphery of the commutator at both ends after machining and thus leaves no gaps into which solder can run when the risers (not shown) are connected at one end of the commutator. In one modification the slot is open at one end and in another the long slot is replaced by two shorter slots to provide two brush tracks.
