Abstract

814,485. Controlling burners. RHEOSTATIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 31, 1957 [Oct. 31, 1956], No. 33241/56. Class 75(1) The supply valve for an oil burner is controlled by a cold cathode electric discharge tube T the ignition electrode S of which is connected to a photo resistor PR fed from a derived voltage approximately 90 degrees out of phase with the anode voltage. An alternating current supply VI is connected to the anode circuit of the tube T which includes a relay R for control of the fuel. The supply voltage V1 also charges a circuit comprising a capacitor C1 and resistor R1 to give a voltage V2 across the resistor R1 and leading approximately by 90 degrees which is applied through a condenser C2 to the photo-resistor PR and a resistor R2 and so to the ignition electrode S of the discharge tube T. A diode D restores the initial condition to the ignition electrode on each negative half cycle of the voltage V2. After its peak the voltage on the ignition electrode falls away at a rate determined by resistance R3 and only if the photo-resistor PR has a correct intermediate value between a break and a short circuit with the ignition electrode voltage still have a voltage sufficiently high for ignition VS when the anode voltage has risen to the minimum anode voltage VA necessary for firing the tube in the main anode-cathode path.
